Course Descriptions:
Part 9 Buildings – Structural Requirements
This is a four day (30 hour) advanced course dealing with the structural provisions of Part 9 of Division B of the Building Code. The course material describes the provisions, their applications and limitations but does not deal specifically with the design of structural elements.
Topics to be covered include: legal considerations, soil conditions, excavations, footings and foundations (including general principals of concrete mix design and cold and hot-weather placement); transfer of forces acting on a building; masonry construction, trusses as well as spatial separations and exposure protection as they apply to the structural elements of a building.

Part 9 Buildings – Fire Protection 

This is a four day (30 hour) more advanced course dealing with the design and verification of fire-resistance ratings; where the code requires fire separations because of building classification, separation of major occupancies, service spaces and exits including penetrations of fire separations. Addressed as well are the topics of means of egress, exit facilities and fire protection and suppression methods.

Part 9 Buildings – Building Envelope
This is a five day (37 hour) basic Part 9 course dealing with plan examination & inspections of the house structure and the building envelope. It includes the following topics: An Introduction to the Ontario Building Code (OBC); The House – General; Difficulties Confronting Building Inspectors; Reading Plans; Building Permit Application; Site Plans; Footings; Foundation Walls; Concrete Slabs on Ground; Roof and Ceiling Construction; Floor Construction; Wall Construction; Other Structural Components.
Please note this course and Part 9: The House – Health & Safety comprise the former Part 9 – The House.

Part 9 Buildings – Health and Safety
This is a five day (37 hour) basic Part 9 course on the plan examination and inspection of health & safety related aspects of the house. It includes the following topics: An Introduction to the OBC; The House – General; Fire Safety & Protection; Chimneys; Fireplaces; Inserts & Solid-fuel-burning Appliances; Stairs; Guards; Insulation; Health & Comfort Requirements; Party Walls; Final Interior Inspection; Final Exterior Inspection.
